About my Artwork
In a world progressively more informed and aware of mental health and surrounded by complex issues, the emotional state and identity of individuals becomes increasingly interesting and important, along with the social and cultural circumstances which often impact them. My work explores these ideas in varied and diverse approaches including painting, drawing and multimedia installation.
As a multimedia artist, I am intrigued by the boarders between art and technology and the possibilities for experimentation within transdisciplinary art. This is true not only of technology but of all disciplines and forms of knowledge. I strive to build a research-led practice. As my current research focuses on the climate crisis, it seems only natural that my practice follows in this direction. Many of my works involve immersive spaces and experiences, aiming to initiate emotional responses in the viewer. My interest in triggering emotional responses in people through my artwork makes it an effective method of addressing important issues and acting as a catalyst for change.

The Basement
The Basement is a collective of young creatives working and exhibiting from an underground space. The Basement is a prime example of how, like Arts Catalyst, I enjoy collaboration as well as working in non-traditional arts spaces. Our recent exhibition consisted of a collection of audio-visual experimentations, live installations and soundscapes. Due to the multimedia nature of the works we were determined to exhibit in a physical space. In order to achieve this while staying safe and following Covid 19 restrictions, we decided to set up the works within the space and livestream the experience online for an audience. Due to restrictions, it was the responsibility of me and one other individual to clear out the space, set it up and install the artworks. There are further plans within the collective, including an upcoming publication.
‘Arts Catalyst promotes new artistic practices, ideas, and ways of inquiring into the world. We work with artists, scientists, and people from myriad backgrounds and perspectives to create imaginative, inspiring, engaging projects addressing important issues of our time, from extractive capitalism and climate change, to histories and representations of race and migration’.

Skills and Values
Relationships
I have had the opportunity to live in many different places and meet a wide range of diverse individuals. As a result of this I am confident, friendly and enjoy meeting and working with new people. I value working with others rather than competing, this includes other people and other arts organisations with similar missions and values.
Leadership
I enjoy leadings projects and working collaboratively with others who share my values. The Basement exhibition as well as my years of working with children and organising clothes and food drives has taught me to be a skilled leader. It has also enlightened me on issues of inequality and poverty, I therefore wish to assist in working towards equal access and opportunity to all within the arts, heritage and cultural sector as well as all other sectors.
Kindness
It is important to be kind to the people around us, as well as those who are not around, for example future generations of the planet. Future inhabitants rely on our kindness towards the planet for their survival. We must therefore not merely be kind to people, but to the planet itself, reducing our environmental impact and acting as a catalyst for change.
Authenticity
I value authenticity and openness. I think it is important to build authentic and honest relationships as well as remaining ethical and ensuring adherence to personal values and those of the organisation.
Knowledge
I value all forms of knowledge, establishing a research-led practice. My dissertation focuses on whether utopian thinking is necessary to allow us to reengage with the world and create a politically resilient position, especially in relation to Covid 19 and the climate crisis.
Risk-Taking
I enjoy taking risks both within and outside of my practice. I believe ambition and experimentation are essential to artistic and professional development. My creativity combined with logic-mindedness allows me to take calculated risks in an attempt to develop my work through ambitious projects.
Why Me?
I have worked at The Ivy, a highly regarded business in the hospitality industry, teaching me teamwork, effective communication and how to work in a high pressure environment. Further to this I have gained invaluable experience working with children through volunteering at local schools in townships in Johannesburg, two to three times weekly for almost three years. I have also been involved in making blankets, organising and collecting for clothes drives, food drives, and many other organised events to raise money and help struggling communities in South Africa. I spent seven days in the Drakensberg mountains helping local communities through various different projects including river clean ups. These experiences have taught me tremendous leadership qualities as well as enlightening me on issues regarding poverty, inequality and the environment.
I have a strong interest in the environment, in reducing environmental impact and tackling climate change. My dissertation is based on climate change, analysing forms of climate denial and emotional responses to the climate crisis, as well as whether utopian thinking is necessary to allow us to reengage with the world and create a politically resilient position, especially in relation to Covid 19 and the climate crisis. I am interested in transdisciplinary art, with a research-led practice specialising in multi media installations and immersive experiences. I intend for my practice to act as a catalyst for change.
